Paul warned the Colossians about philosophy. That verse taken out of context has been used to keep people ignorant and afraid of "much learning". Paul was warning them about a form of philosophy mixed with Judaism and Gnosticism that was being taught in the church.

The riders are not here to show God attacking humanity, instead God is showing the weakness of the peace that we think we have bought. The wrath of the lamb is the removal of the protection of the scapegoat mechanism. The wrath of God is not directed against us, the wrath of God is when God allows us to see what we've really been doing all along.

Religion is the way in which we take the generative scapegoat mechanism that allows us to identify an outside to victimize and ostracize that person. Thereby alleviate our tension and feel good about ourselves. All of our social networks are built on the backs of pushing someone aside.

What we call peace, our ability to live together, comes from our ability to push others away. We can't just constantly murder people. We can't just constantly have sacrificial victims, so, eventually these ideas need to be ritualized. This is what religion is.

Paul has said that we are all guilty. In that, he says that God may have mercy on us all. Sometimes we have questions about scriptures. Mary pondered those things in her heart. I just say that God has them in the crock pot cooking and when he is finished then we'll have the answer. He is not withholding anything, but he is preparing our hearts to receive.

Scripture can be and should be challenging. We are too quick to try and establish doctrines. It is the simplicity of Christ. It is all about Him and we are ever growing in that understanding.

God in Christ has reconciled all unto himself. God in Christ has now chosen all. There is no more "Us and Them". He has included us all into His story.

The peace we know has come through the mechanism of the scapegoat and violence. All we have ever know is peace through the edge of the sword. Paul speaks of a peace that passes understanding. When the scapegoat loses its ability to bring peace, tribulation is what follows.
