Peter wants to show that he is one of them. The only way that you are part of the crowd is to join in in their scapegoating. Peter is unaware of what he is doing until the cock crows. He wept bitterly. Peter's conversion is very similar to Paul's. What Peter hears from Jesus is, "You've joined the people who are crucifying me, and you've done it in the most natural unconscious way possible."

All four gospels record Peter's denial. One of the things they do from an anthropological viewpoint is to show us that the crowd spirit is all powerful, and that only Jesus can conquer it. It is a real power on earth and can conquer even Peter.

You get to remind people that forgiveness does not come through trying harder or what mood God is in. Forgiveness comes through the grace of God.
