There is no life (righteousness) found in trying to keep the Law. The rich young ruler (Jews) sought life in the keeping of the Law. The Law only points to Christ and can never produce the righteousness it pointed to.

The rich young ruler came to Jesus seeking life. In all his riches he was still missing Life. His riches wasn't in money but in the self-righteousness of keeping the law.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Religion is always trying to do a work to please God. The result is always the same. We run and hide from God.
