The widow's only power in the parable is the power of showing up, The power of presence and grit, but the parable suggests that this power is not to be taken lightly. Prayer is a great mystery, and we can't know it.

I had to sit with this moment in the story for a long time before its irony and strangeness really hit me. The Son of God is so thirsty at the mount of a well and it's the outcast who provides the water he needs.

Nowhere is this woman described as promiscuous. Nowhere does Jesus call her a sinner! This is not a story of morality. This is a story about Jesus revealing Himself as the Messiah to a fellow human being.

In the midst of the wilderness, our eyes are often fixated on our pain and if we bother to look for angels at all, we look only for them to rescue us. But the angels don't medivac Jesus out of the wilderness, they tend to him.
