In the midst of the wilderness, our eyes are often fixated on our pain and if we bother to look for angels at all, we look only for them to rescue us. But the angels don't medivac Jesus out of the wilderness, they tend to him.

Jesus has to learn a kind of love that is independent of external circumstances. He knows what God's love feels like in the baptismal waters of Jordan, in the gathered crowds, in the good church services. Now he has to learn the shape and color of God's love in the barren places, in the emptiness, in the lonely shadows.

Jesus didn't choose the wilderness. Mark tells us the Spirit of God drives him there. This is not Jesus giving up chocolate and diet soda as a spiritual discipline or going on a retreat at a beautiful vacation spot. This is the Spirit of God grabbing Jesus by the back of the neck and throwing him headlong into a place he doesn't want to go!

The blind man who is an outsider because he is blind is given sight and restored to community. The Pharisees had already labeled this man and were fine with him being an outsider. That's what bias and blindness really does. It always wants to exclude and not include.

The Pharisees own bias is what caused their blindness. We should always look for these same bias's when it comes to what we think about "outsiders".
