"Purge your conscience from dead works." Dead works here is not sinful works. Dead works is thinking you can earn God's approval, earn your way to God's table. The ashes of the Red Heifer were not for sin, it was for coming in contact with death - dead works - dictated by an evil conscience.

All that God gave Israel in the Old Testament was pointing to Christ. The provision provided for touching a death has been fulfilled in Christ. The ashes of the Red Heifer is the provision laid up in the New Testament for an evil conscience.

The ashes of the red heifer were not designed to remove moral sin, it was only a ceremonial cleansing called in Hebrew 9:13 - "that which sanctifies to the purifying of the flesh." How often have we felt far away from the presence of God. It wasn't sin that separated us, it was the negative influence upon the mind, emotion and the conscience.

In view of the many wonderful sacrifices provided for sin in the Old Testament and the fact that this red heifer was in no sense related to those, we must look elsewhere for the antitype to this red heifer. What then did this sacrifice of the red heifer signify?

In the worship of the Old Testament, great principles of truth and spiritual realities were conveyed through outward signs and symbols. The red heifer alone was not for present need. It was offered to meet future needs.

Atonement means the place that we have been made at one with God. That place is Christ Jesus. God didn't need to be appeased. He didn't need to be changed. He needed to heal the wound in our relationship with him that caused our death. He accomplished all that in Jesus. With His strips we are healed.

In Romans, Paul tells the Greeks to stop being so high-minded, he tells the Jews to stop thinking that they are so special. We have all messed up and fallen short of God's glory. We can rest because God in Christ has freely justified us all!
